Inspiration for Themes for Your Next Offsite
While planning your next offsite, you may be wondering how to spruce it up - how to add a little bit of whimsy and joy that can be woven throughout the entire experience. And the best way to do that is to create a theme!
In our last article, “Creating a Theme for Your Offsite,” we discussed why themes are valuable for offsite planners and attendees and the different ways to weave a theme into your offsite.
In today’s post, we want to inspire you by sharing a few different themes and how they can be integrated into the various layers of your offsite.
Let’s dive in.
Crowd Pleaser Theme: 80s Office
If you want to create a theme for an offsite that accommodates a variety of personalities, choose one that feels joyful without being so specific that it alienates anyone - a theme that everyone can relate to and wrap their minds around.
Let’s imagine an 80s Office Offsite. How might that look?
Retro Vibes: Colorful wall decals for meeting spaces and poster boards with 80s movie stars in each guest room. Look for hotels with a mid-century modern aesthetic.
Throwback Menus: Create a snack bar with Twinkies, Jell-O cups, Doritos, and Coca-Cola floats. Design the menus in 80s block styling.
Nostalgic Team Building: Organize typing competitions to see who can type the fastest, or set up Olympic-style games using old office equipment like rolling chairs and fax machines.
Presentations: Encourage 80s graphics on presentations so guests can design them ahead of time. If you want to take it further, use projectors.
Attire: Designate one of your meeting days as an opportunity for everyone to dress as if it's an 80s office day. Send out inspirational ideas to the team ahead of time so they know what to pack.
Entertainment: How about 80s karaoke? Have one of your activities be a night of karaoke where every song performed must be from the 80s.
Swag: Create 80s-themed welcome kits with Rubik's cubes a
Team-Specific Theme: Reach for the Stars
This theme can be based on anything related to the company culture. This requires you to take a deeper look into what is unique about where you work.
Imagine a company that names every internal project after something in the night sky. Project North Star is being launched next week, while the Product team finishes Project Orion’s Belt. So how about we throw a star-themed offsite? How might that look?
Lodging: Consider areas near a national dark park - places where you can easily see the night sky. Alternatively, find a place with a futuristic design.
Drinks: Name each drink with a theme, such as “Galactic Punch” or “Meteor Mojito.”
Activities: Organize a nighttime stargazing party and hire an expert or astronaut to share their knowledge. Check if there’s an observatory near your accommodation or a museum with a space exhibit.
Trivia: Host a space-themed trivia night where everyone dresses in their favorite galactic gear.
Swag: Offer constellation-themed t-shirts, miniature telescopes, and stick-on stars for guests to decorate their walls.Opportunities for Theming:
Company Values Theme: Sustainable Future
Choose this theme if you want to base your offsite on company values. First, decide which company value is most important. While there are many values, here’s an example of a company that values a small carbon footprint and wants to host a “Sustainable Future” themed offsite. How might that look?
Sustainable Stay: Choose eco-friendly hotels with LEED ratings, or opt for nature-centric locations like lodges, cabins, or campsites.
Farm to Table: Source meals from farm-to-table restaurants that offer plant-based food and sustainable, compostable packaging.
Activities: Organize a volunteer event at the offsite, plan hikes or nature walks, and consider hosting a gardening workshop or eco-friendly crafts.
Meetings and Presentations: Hire a speaker or an expert in an earth sciences field to inspire your guests. Brainstorm ways the company can be more eco-friendly.
Bonding: Organize a "Sustainability Showcase" where teams present ideas on how they can implement small or large environmental changes in both personal and business practices. This will spark important conversations about fostering a greener future.
As you begin to think about your offsite and its theme, don’t worry if every category is infused with the theme. These are potential ideas to help you brainstorm what will work for you and your team. The goal is to have fun!
