How to celebrate Mother’s Day with your coworkers

Mother’s Day in the U.S .is coming up on Sunday, May 9. Have you thought about ways to honor the moms on your team?

Working from home has given us even greater visibility (literally) into the balancing act that parents do every day. Special initiatives to support and celebrate parents are on the rise, and Mother’s Day is a perfect example of a fun, heartfelt way to show moms appreciation and respect for all that they do.

The possibilities are endless. Here are some ideas to get you started!

1. Send something nice

The moms on your team will definitely enjoy a token of appreciation from the other people they spend every day supporting, their coworkers.

2. Plan an event

Set aside time to celebrate moms in a virtual or in person team event.

TIP #1: Be mindful of parents’ schedules. If the event is outside of normal work hours, consider an event kids can participate in and contribute to making their mom feel special.

TIP #2: Do all the moms at your company know each other? A Mother’s Day event could double as a fun networking event and a chance for moms to tap into the parent community at your company.

TIP #3: Keep in mind that Mother’s Day is a difficult holiday for some people. Whatever you have planned should be totally optional and pressure-free.

3. Show up for the parents on your team

Parents have been working under tremendous stress during COVID. If it has been a while since you reached out to the moms on your team to ask them what they need, now is the time. Consider 1:1 outreach to better understand their individual needs or a survey that gives parents a chance to give honest feedback. Even when the pandemic is finally behind us, parents have unique needs—and strengths—that should inform your company’s culture. From leave policies to company perks to flexible work policies, there has never been a better time to champion programs that support the amazing parents on your team.
